How To Use Paddle Shifters

Available, or even standard with many vehicles, paddle shifters are often a baffling amenity for Valparaiso area drivers. What do paddle shifters do, and how do you use them? Learn how to use paddle shifters with this quick guide from Connors Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram.

What Are Paddle Shifters?

Paddle shifters are often located behind or near the steering wheel on sportier vehicles and upgraded trim levels. Pressing one paddle brings the vehicle down a gear, and pressing the other brings the vehicle up a gear, enabling drivers to way to switch gears quickly. Generally, when you use a paddle, the clutch receives an electronic signal for gear selection, and the gear shifts.

Paddle shifts also generally offer more control to help you manage your engine speed or RPM better. With correct downshifting, you can even extend the life of your brake pads using paddle shifters.

How to Use Paddle Shifters

Driving a car equipped with paddle shifters, enter manual mode to put yourself in full control to paddle shift. Generally, the right paddle upshifts and the left paddle downshifts. Don’t worry about harming your vehicle when shifting gears – paddle shifters won’t change gears if you:

  • Upshift before the engine reaches the lower limit of the higher gear
  • Downshift before reaching the upper limit of the lower gear
  • Press one paddle while the other is being held down
  • Press both paddles at the same time
  • Try to shift to third or higher while stationary
  • Let the automatic transmission take over for a while by entering D mode.
